- Comments: Central High School's heritage begins in 1849, making it the oldest school in Grand Rapids and the second oldest school in Michigan. In 1862, Central graduated its first class of only 13 students - - all young woman. The class of 1992 will be the 130th class graduated at Central High School. The decorative elements of the building have Gothic overtones, particularly the use of gargoyles. The school was used as a model for other schools being built around the nation. Jesse Davis, the first principle, was responsible for the design of Central High School.
