  • Swarthout, Elvin (Original Owner) – Elvin Swarthout, mayor of Grand Rapids for three terms between 1924 and 1930, died at 1:30 Friday morning at his residence at 227 Union av., S.E., where he had been confined for 10 days following an attack of heart disease. He was 70 years old. The former mayor was well-known throughout the state as a result of his legal practice.

    Mr. Swarthout was graduated from the University of Michigan law school in 1887 and was one of the first attorneys to have offices in the Michigan Trust building where he remained throughout his career. He was born in Ovid and had resided in Grand Rapids 47 years
